Technology in Education:
A variety of applications at the teacher's disposal
In an era in that boasts frequent and varied technological changes and developments, the International Channel's Online Academy at The MOFET Institute is delighted to announce an online summer seminar on the topic of Technological Applications in Education.
The seminar will afford exposure to a range of applications and their uses in teaching and learning on personal computers, cell phones, iPads, and the Internet.
The seminar is meant for anyone who is keen to enrich his/her knowledge of the field. No prior knowledge is required. You can participate in the seminar from your personal computer at home or at your place of work.
The lecturers are all highly experienced in the field with which they will be dealing in the lectures: Prof. Sheizaf Rafaeli, Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky, Dr. Sarah Schrire and Dr. Oren Zuckerman.
Throughout the entire duration of the seminar, constant technical support will be available to the participants. All you need is an Internet connection and earphones or speakers.

Seminar Structure and Contents:
The seminar, which will be held in July 2013, comprises four weekly 90-minute online meetings:
Session 1: Computers and Networks are the Medium– Gaming and Sharing are the Message
Computers and networks are here, and are rapidly changing the landscape of schools. If computers are the medium, what is the message? When computers and networks are added into the ages-old and well-established equation of learning and schooling, what is about to change? And what change do we want? In other words, how do the new technologies and their use affect the opportunities and processes of learning? Computers and Networks afford new modes of work, learning, leisure and social action that include multi-sense, interaction, nonlinear processes, elastic time frames, and decentralization. Each of these characteristics constitutes a challenge and an opportunity.
In this talk I will elaborate on the development, implementation and evaluation of the use of online tools for learning, with special attention to games and gamification, sharing and collaboration.
The iPad is a powerful tool to support interactive lessons, formative assessments at every stage in the learning process, and student centered learning. This presentation will focus on some of the most powerful apps for accomplishing these goals including note-taking apps like Evernote, real-time student response apps like Socrative, "flipped classroom" video apps like Showme, and presentation apps like Nearpod. This webinar will also explore the change in teacher pedagogy necessary in a 1 to 1 learning environment in which every student has an iPad or similar device
The abundance of information characterizing the first and second decades of the twenty-first century has impacted work and daily living. In any context, it is easy for the scales to tip and for information wealth to turn into information overload. The webinar focuses on how digital social media can be harnessed to develop strategies for the productive use of information in today’s knowledge society. Webinar participants will be shown tools that they can adopt to enrich their personal and professional practices. They will also be invited to discuss the challenges arising from identities projected in the fast-paced realities of both physical and online environments.
Session 4: Playful Digital Learning: A Case Study of the "Scratch" Program in Primary Schools

Scratch is a playful programming learning environment created at MIT Media Lab in an effort to engage children in inventing and creating digital content rather than simply consuming or interacting with it. Most kids today are proficient at watching music videos on their computers, playing games on their parents’ mobile phones, or communicating with their friends on social networks. But what about creating an interactive game, story, or music experience?
Scratch is an easy-to-use environment designed to address this need, allowing children and educators to create their own interactive media. Scratch was carefully designed at MIT Media Lab based on constructionism values, promoting playful learning through open-ended exploration, and encouraging children to create content that is meaningful to them. While introducing Scratch and promoting these values in a school system has great promise, it also faces many challenges. The IDC Media Innovation Lab in Herzliya, Israel, has been promoting Scratch as a playful digital learning environments in formal schools, after-school centers, and home-school environments. In this discussion-oriented panel, we will present several case studies of Scratch workshops in Israeli schools, and discuss the promise and the challenges.
