​Theory and Practice in Teaching Hebrew in the Diaspora
 
Description:

The course is mainly a theoretical introduction to teaching the language by outlining directions for the practice of teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language. During the course, the challenges facing those who teach Modern Hebrew will be posed, didactic and other problems that are anticipated in the acquisition of Hebrew as a Foreign Language will be presented, and ways to overcome these problems will be proposed.

The course will be taught in Hebrew.

Course Objectives:

  1. To become acquainted with the various approaches in teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language that have developed over recent generations and with the various methods that have evolved from them, and to examine and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
  2. To outline directions for the practice of teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language.
  3. To set the challenges that face those who teach Hebrew as a Foreign Language.
  4. To point out didactic and other common problems in the acquisition of Hebrew as a Foreign Language as well as ways of solving them.

Study Program:

  1. Introduction: Teaching the Hebrew language – fundamental questions, challenges and present situation
    • The status of the Hebrew language and teaching the language throughout history
    • The advent of "the scientific era" in teaching the Hebrew language with the foundation of the "Hebrew language committee" (1890)
    • Various controversies and formative events that are linked to the assimilation of Hebrew as the medium of instruction – "the language dispute" at the early days of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, the discussions in the "Teachers' meeting" in Zichron Ya'akov and so on
    • Fundamental questions in the field of teaching the language
      1. Hebrew from the sources or contemporary Hebrew
      2. Reading and writing skills or spoken language
      3. Language as culture or language as a medium of communication
    • Theory and practice in language teaching: The distinction among approach, method and techniques

  2. Approaches and methods in language teaching and in Hebrew teaching in particular
    • The main approaches: "the translation approach" and "the natural approach" and their sources
    • The translation approach – different types: presentation, demonstrations and analysis
      1. The classic translation approach
      2. The bilingual approach
      3. The translation-grammar approach
    • The natural approach
    • The direct approach
    • The scientific-linguistic approach
    • "The new approach" (the "hear and speak" method)
    • The audiovisual approach

  3. The "Hebrew in Hebrew" method (the ulpan system)
    • The principles of the method
    • The controversy for and against the method
      1. Overview of the advantages
      2. Overview of the disadvantages
    • Planning the learning material and the way of teaching according to the principles of the method (demonstrations from various domains)
      1. Planning programs that encompass four fields: reading, writing, listening and speaking
      2. Fostering the skills of structure, intention, language and content in reading comprehension and decoding text
      3. Context-dependent grammar
      4. The inclusion of current affairs in the learning material
      5. Online instruction and the use of Internet tools

  4. Hebrew teaching in the Jewish education in the present-day Diaspora: Problems, challenges and directions
    • Defining objectives and goals
    • Up-to-date and systemic curricula
    • Textbooks and additional learning materials (including audiovisual materials, Internet materials and so on)
      1. Enterprises by institutes and institutions
      2. Enterprises by local teachers
      3. Publications of experts from Israel and the Diaspora
    • The status of Hebrew teachers, teacher education and in-service courses for teachers
    • Standardization and evaluation
    • Personal motivation and social atmosphere
    • Hebrew in a struggle with other languages
    • The instruction of the Jewish subjects and Hebrew instruction – contrast and completion
    • Hebrew in the service of Jewish education and the Zionist realization
